Paul, his wife and 10 friends wanted to spend three nights discovering the wines of the Loire Valley and Grape Escapes were delighted to arrange this for them.
The group travelled to Tours on the Eurostar via Paris and upon arrival, they checked into double rooms at the 4* Oceania L’Univers, located in the heart of the city centre. After freshening up, a three course dinner was served in a traditional local restaurant.
On day two, the group was met at the hotel and chauffeured throughout the day by an English-speaking Grape Escapes guide. First stop was Langlois Château in Saumur. Following a short ‘classroom’ session to look at the geology of the region and why it is able to produce different styles of wine, the group enjoyed a tour of their extensive tufa stone cellars built into the side of the valley and the visit concluded with tastings of a variety of wines from across the region including sparkling wines.
Lunch was then served in a troglodytic cave, where they tasted the local speciality, fouée. The day continued with a tasting session of some of the region’s best wines at one of the most prestigious producers in Chinon (Charles Joguet) and on the way back to Tours, the group stopped off at an artisanal chèvrérie, for a paired cheese and wine tasting experience. In the evening, a gala dinner was prepared for them by a Michelin starred Chef.
The following morning, the group’s chauffeur collected them after a leisurely breakfast and accompanied them to Amboise, where they stocked up on local produce. After lunch, they visited the fascinating Château du Clos Lucé, the former home of Leonardo da Vinci. The day ended at a magnificent family-run Château in Vouvray, where they visited the estate’s award winning grounds and tasted a large selection of the Château’s own wines.
The group then took the Eurostar back to London on day four, laden with local treats.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip, in particular the fabulous meals. Our guides were extremely welcoming and informative and the Châteaux that we visited were beautiful.
