PORTO - THE AREA
Porto Wine Tasting Tours, Holidays and Trips
Port wine (also known as Vinho do Porto, Porto or simply Port) is a fortified wine that is produced exclusively in the Douro Valley. The wine received its name in the latter half of the 17th Century from the seaside city of Porto, where much of the product was brought to market or for export to other countries in Europe.
The Duoro Valley was defined and established as a protected region or appellation in 1756, making it the oldest defined and protected wine region in the world. Although fortified wines in the style of port are also produced in other countries outside Portugal, the European Union Protected Designation of Origin guidelines protect the region in that only the product from Portugal may be labelled as Port or Porto.
